Scratch Off Latex
Scratch off latex, also known as rub removable or scratch off ink, is a specialist print feature that can be applied to a range of printed materials. This opaque coating conceals text or imagery beneath it until it is scratched away, making it well suited to promotions, competitions, vouchers, and security codes.
Scratch off latex can be used on stocks from around 200gsm through to heavier board weights of 400gsm, depending on the application. It is most commonly available in silver or gold, providing a distinctive and interactive finish.

The Process:
Both digital and lithographic printing methods can be used to apply scratch off latex ink. Once printed, a lottery release seal is added to the designated areas to ensure the latex can be removed cleanly using a coin, plectrum, or fingernail.
Gloss or matt lamination may also be applied if required. In most cases, the scratch off latex is added as the final stage after the release seal has dried, although sheets can be passed back through the press if further print is needed over the latex area.
This technique is suitable for a wide range of printed products, including cards, posters, promotional pieces, and scratch cards.

Potential Pit Falls
Scratch-off latex can be a highly effective feature on printed materials, but it requires careful planning to achieve the best results. Understanding the most common challenges and how to avoid them will help ensure the scratch-off area performs as intended while maintaining a clean, professional finish.
Issue:
Poor adhesion of the scratch off ink or lamination and print set off.
Solution:
Allow plenty of drying time. The print must be fully dry before the lottery release seal is applied and the lottery release seal must also have adequate drying time before the latex is applied. The amount of drying time required will depend on many factors ranging from the weather to the ink saturation on the print so it’s important that the process isn’t rushed. Choose the correct paper type; uncoated paper is unsuitable for scratch off latex inks due to its absorbency.
Issue:
The prize can be seen through the reverse.
Solution:
When applying scratch off latex to printed cards, selecting an appropriate paper weight is essential to prevent the underlying text or imagery from showing through. Heavier stocks are generally recommended to provide better opacity and support the finish.
It is also advisable to avoid placing highly saturated colours directly beneath the latex area. If colour is required, reducing the tint value in that section can help minimise show-through and ensure a clean, consistent result.

Issue:
The print on top of the scratch off latex is pale.
Solution:
To avoid show-through when using scratch off latex, the recommended color is 100% black. If colored text or images are needed, then the scratch off latex should be changed to white.
Issue:
Scratch off areas are too close to each other.
Solution:
The size and shape of the scratch off areas can be customized according to your preference. However, it is important to remember that the scratch off latex will extend beyond the designated area by approximately 2mm.
