Frequently Asked Questions

Got questions about flyers and leaflets? This FAQ brings together clear, practical answers to the most common queries about printing, design, materials, and delivery. Whether you’re ordering for the first time or managing regular print campaigns, you’ll find straightforward information to help you get the best results from your next project.

When planning leaflet artwork for print, it helps to know the standard UK paper sizes used across the industry. The most common leaflet sizes are:

  • A3: 297 × 420 mm
  • A4: 210 × 297 mm
  • A5: 148 × 210 mm
  • A6: 105 × 148 mm
  • DL: 99 × 210 mm

Design your leaflet at full size in CMYK colour mode and 300 dpi resolution to ensure sharp detail and accurate print results.

A professional leaflet layout must include bleed and safe zones to avoid white edges when trimmed. Always add a 3 mm bleed to each side of your artwork, and keep all text and key graphics at least 3 mm inside the trim edge. This ensures nothing important is cut off. When exporting your file, include crop marks and confirm the bleed area is visible in your PDF settings.

For commercial leaflet printing, the best option is a print-ready PDF set to CMYK colour mode at 300 dpi. This setup gives sharp images and predictable colour. Embed or outline all fonts, flatten transparencies, and save your file as PDF/X-1a or PDF/X-4 for the most consistent professional print output.

A deep, even black area needs more than just 100% K. Use a rich black mix to give your leaflet stronger, more consistent coverage. For coated paper, try C60 M40 Y40 K100. For uncoated paper, reduce to C40 M30 Y30 K100 to avoid over-inking. Avoid using 100% black alone on large areas, as it can print unevenly or appear grey.

The right paper weight depends on how your leaflets will be distributed.

  • 130–170 gsm: ideal for high-volume door drops and mailers.
  • 200–250 gsm: offers a sturdier feel for handouts or in-store use.
  • 300–350 gsm: gives a premium, card-like finish for menus or event marketing.

Heavier paper stocks should always be creased before folding to prevent cracking and maintain a professional look.

Finishing options protect your leaflet and enhance its appearance.

  • Gloss lamination adds shine and makes colours appear vibrant.
  • Matt lamination gives a soft, smooth look for a premium feel.
  • Soft touch lamination provides a luxury, velvety texture.

Lamination works best on paper 200 gsm or above, helping prevent scuffs and cracking. Choose your finish based on brand style and intended use.

Folds help organise content and change how a leaflet opens or reads. Common types include:

  • Half fold (A4 to A5): simple, balanced layout for menus or price lists.
  • Tri-fold (C-fold): compact, clear structure for step-by-step guides.
  • Z-fold (concertina): opens sequentially, great for storytelling or maps.
  • Gate fold: dramatic reveal ideal for offers or campaigns.
  • Cross fold or double parallel: used for A3 layouts folded to smaller handout sizes.

Each fold type affects how readers navigate your content, so match the format to your message.

In the UK, most printed flyers and leaflets qualify for zero-rated VAT under HMRC guidelines because they are distributed once and not reused. However, if the print item acts as a voucher, form, ticket, or reusable document, it may be standard-rated at 20%. If you’re unsure, confirm the classification before ordering to avoid unexpected charges.

To supply print-ready artwork, set your design to the final trim size plus 3 mm bleed on every edge. Work in CMYK mode, keep key text 3 mm from the trim, and export as a PDF with bleed and crop marks enabled. Use 300 dpi images for photos and vector graphics for logos or icons to maintain quality. These steps ensure your artwork prints accurately across all design software.

Next day leaflet printing is available on selected products for customers who meet artwork and proofing deadlines. Send print-ready artwork before 10am, approve your digital proof promptly, and complete payment to confirm production. Orders are printed and dispatched the same day for next working day delivery across most of mainland UK. Some regions, such as the Highlands and Islands, may require an extra day for delivery.

Flyers and leaflets have a lot of similarities so the difference is fairly minimal. However, they do have their own purposes! Flyers are typically printed on a heavier paper stock and contain advertising content. Their images are normally larger and there is less text. Leaflets are normally folded and printed on a lighter stock. Although they are still a single sheet, they tend to contain more informational text and smaller images.

Our leaflets are available on the following paper stocks: silk (90gsm-200gsm), gloss (90gsm-200gsm), uncoated (80gsm-190gsm), recycled (80gsm-200gsm) and Kraft (100gsm-225gsm).

Our flyers are available on the following paper stocks: silk (200gsm-400gsm), gloss (200gsm-400gsm), uncoated (250gsm-400gsm), recycled (250gsm-350gsm) and Kraft (280gsm).

Depending on the quantity of your order, we will either print your leaflets and flyers digitally or on our litho press. If you have a preference, please let us know when placing you order. There may be a small price difference.

Yes – all our paper stocks are sourced from FSC approved stockists. We recycle all our waste paper and ink/toner cartridges and our lithographic inks are 100% vegetable based. For further information, please visit our ‘Environment’ page, under ‘About Us’.

All of our paper stocks are fully recyclable as long as lamination is applied to a maximum of just one side.

We’ll contact FSC on your behalf to seek approval to print the logo. The FSC claim will relate to the claim on the paper being used (most commonly FSC recycled or FSC mix). Once permission to use the logo has been granted, our pre-press team will add the appropriate FSC logo and claim to your artwork and a PDF proof will be sent to you for approval.

As many as you like. We print by mixing Blue (otherwise known as cyan), red (otherwise known as magenta) yellow and black. This is referred to as CMYK and from these 4 colours we can produce all the colours of the rainbow.

There is sometimes a reduced cost for black only printing but if you’re having colour print then you can include as many colours as you like at no extra cost. There would only be an additional cost if you require a Pantone colour (this is where a specific ink is used rather than creating the colour from the standard (CMYK) 4 colour process.

Most of our printed products (excluding brochures) are printed using a single sheet of paper. We print on one side of the sheet for single sided printing and on both sides of the sheet for double sided printing.

If you’re ordering a product that will be folded and no print is required on the inside, (e.g. document corners) or will enclose your product (e.g. box sleeves, belly bands, pillow boxes etc) then these will usually be printed single sided so that once the sheet is trimmed down and folded or joined you will see print on all sides (front and back for a folded item or on all 4 outer sides for a box sleeve or pillow box).

PDF proofs will be sent by email for your approval as standard. There is no charge for this.

For digital and large format printed jobs we can send you a printed sample if required – there may be a small charge for this to cover costs.

For litho printed jobs we can send you a printed proof via our Epson SureColour P7000 which is calibrated with the litho presses; we can also supply you with samples of paper and unprinted brochure mock ups. There may be a small charge for this service.

No worries! Our friendly sales team are on hand to talk you through the process without the use of jargon. Our design team are available to help with artwork and our pre-press and production teams will check the quality at all stages.

Rest assured – your print run is in experienced hands.

These days there is very little difference in terms of quality between the 2 methods and you’d be hard pushed to tell which printing method had been used when examining a finished product.

Lithographic printing is cost effective for larger runs and can accommodate a larger sheet size of up to B2.

Digital printing is cost effective for smaller runs and is limited to a sheet size of A3.

Our sales team will select the most suitable method for you but if you have a particular preference for litho printing (e.g. if pantone colours are required) then just let our team know.

Our large format printers can print up to 3 meters in width with no limit to length. Large format printing is used for banners, roller banners and printed boards.
